in memoriam: our youth

Ella Xue '23

we emblazon our history

in monochromatic photographs,

sing over the discord of our gods.

we trail our fingertips

along oakwood-imprinted initials,

reminisce of rope swings and dirt-stained heels.

we dive for stories

embedded in river-washed rocks,

carve mountains into our souls.

we play games of hide-and-seek,

hide our tears and seek the visions

eluding us with each breath of the moon.

we dig holes in soft grass

seal them with pinky-promises to remember,

pile on pebbles like pitiful gravemarkers.

years later, our adventures

will drown a thousand times over,

only to resurface as memories
