Broken promises fell

Ella Xue '23

onto the scorching-hot dirt

like wilting petals

of no-longer verdant spring

clinging onto sickly stems

until the scythe of summer

sliced them off

and burning heat melted

the binding resin of devotion

and the metallic sun

smoldered the phoenix reborn

into dusty ashes

and the rust of time

suffocated its gilded gold feathers

as the tides swelled

enchanted by the swaying moon

blue flames of hell

etched ever-lasting scars

of marred trust

into the maw

of the universe

in a microcosm where

tears like shooting stars

trickled down your rosy cheeks

and tumbled down

onto the bitter-cold ground.
